英文寫作的思維和中文寫作完全不一樣

不論寫作還是翻譯

常常都會因為難以轉換兩種語言的寫作思維

造成寫出來的英文語句太「中式英文」或冗長繁瑣

現在就告訴大家一點英文寫作的小撇步！

(以下內容摘錄自《英文寫作瘦身法》 陳世琪◎編著)

1. 生字不如熟字

英文寫作時，使用太多難字反而會讓句子變難懂

所以下次寫信的時候

可以捨棄拗口的單字，改用常見的字：

I acknowledge receipt of your letter → Thank you for your letter

at your earliest convenience → as soon as you can

2. 適當使用被動句

被動式只能表達事情的現狀

因此會讓句子變得比較沒有生命、枯燥

也會讓句子比較不簡潔有力

New classrooms were built by the school. → The school built new classrooms.

以上述句子為例，改成主動句後的確更簡潔明瞭

3. 少用介詞片語

用太多介詞片語，反而會讓句子變得虛弱無力

The student should be awarded in consideration of his academic ashievement. → We should award a student for his academic work.

將 in consideration of 換成 for 之後

句子就變得更簡潔

除了in consideration of

很多介詞片語都能用一兩個字替代

as a consequence of → because of

by means of → by, with, using

for the purpose of → to

in addition to → besides

in case of → if

4. 力求化繁為簡

英文寫作的其中一個重點就是「簡潔」

如果可以用一個單字替代

就盡量不要寫成冗長的句子

destroyed by fire → burned down

to bring all this to a conclusion → to end

during the same time that → while

for the same reason → likewise

at this point of the time → at present
